On March 11-14, 2025, the Institute for Bible Translation held a training seminar for new participants from 19 translation projects: Aghul, Akhvakh, Andi, Chamalal, Chuvash, Even, Evenki, Ghogoberi, Hinukh, Hunzib, Kaitag, Kalmyk, Karachay, Karata, Khorazm, Kubachi, Nenets, Tsudakhar and Yakut.

The purpose of the seminar was to train translators, exegetical advisors, and philological editors. Lectures were given by IBT’s director, Dr. Bronwen Cleaver, and several IBT coordinators: Sergei Davidoglu, Natalia Manzienko, Ketevan Gadilia, and Elena Mosolova.

The participants learned the basics of translation theory, as well as about the way that IBT organizes the translation process. Special attention was given to the key stages of the work: the practice of exegetical and philological editing and comprehension testing. A series of lectures was given on the linguistic aspects of Bible translation.

The seminar also included an introduction to the New and Old Testaments. Participants were familiarized with the historical and cultural context of the Bible and the key issues that arise in translation. The structure, genre, and characteristics of the major biblical books were examined in detail. In the sessions on written and oral translation, participants discussed the practical aspects and challenges they face in their projects.

In their feedback, the participants emphasized the richness of the program, which allowed them to deepen their knowledge in the field of translation. They noted the effective communication, productive group work and friendly atmosphere of the event. The workshop was not only a training platform, but also a place for building ties and trust between representatives of different projects, peoples and languages.
