The IBT Children's Bible in the Bashkir language

The Institute for Bible Translation has released a new Bashkir-language edition called Izge Yazma säxifäläre ("Pages of the Holy Scripture"), which is a translation of IBT’s Children's Bible, known to many in Russia by its blue cover. The publication of this book continues the work of IBT’s Bashkir translation project.

The book contains 250 biblical stories covering events from the Old and New Testament — from the creation of the world to the end of the world. It is intended for readers of all ages who wish to become acquainted with the Bible. It includes both retellings and direct quotations from Holy Scripture. Key events and concepts are presented concisely and accessibly, and each story is accompanied by a vibrant color illustration. The edition is supplemented with geographical maps and photographs of biblical sites and an index of biblical references. The text of this edition has been fully harmonized with the text of the complete Bashkir Bible, which was published in 2023.

Bashkir is a Turkic language that is one of the official languages of the Republic of Bashkortostan. According to the 2021 census, it is spoken by more than a million people, including not only ethnic Bashkirs but also representatives of other ethnic groups (Tatars, Russians, Chuvash, Mari, etc.). The vast majority of Bashkir speakers live in Bashkortostan. Additionally, speakers of the language can be found in Udmurtia, Tatarstan, and the Orenburg, Tyumen, Chelyabinsk, Kurgan, and Sverdlovsk regions, as well as in the Perm Krai, Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug, and Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug.

The edition has been published in a small, initial print-run of 700 copies, which will be distributed free of charge to libraries and churches in Bashkortostan.

A PDF version of this book is available on the IBT website in the electronic Bible publications section.
